Monochrome Living: How to get the look
Monochrome Living is the edgy autumn update for your home: clean black-and-white combinations, bold contrasts and luxurious textures create a look that is minimalist, modern, yet inviting. Creative Director Tatjana Köbler from the Westwing Design Service shares her tips on how to master the trend with style.
"I always start with a clear colour palette. For the monochrome look, that means black, white, shades of grey or soft off-white. Different nuances within this family add depth, bring spaces to life and prevent a flat or sterile impression."
"Contrasts bring energy into a room. A dark sofa against light walls, or black frames and lamps set against a white background, make the look dynamic and modern without appearing overwhelming."
"Textures are my secret ingredient: combine matte and glossy finishes and add accents with black, brass or chrome metals – this gives the look elegance and a sense of luxurious depth. Complement the style with velvet, bouclé, leather, wood or natural stone to add warmth and structure to an otherwise clean, minimalist scheme."
"Lighting defines every look. Natural light, warm sources and indirect illumination highlight the different tones and create depth, while shadow and light accents add striking effects."
"In a monochrome space, every chosen piece should have its moment. A statement piece of furniture, artwork or a striking lamp becomes a true eye-catcher that shapes the room and gives it character. Use them sparingly and with intent."
